Two singles champions were crowned at WTT Champions Montpellier 2025 on Sunday.
Sweden’s Truls Moregard (Men’s Singles No. 5) swept Sora Matsushima (Men’s No. 15) to take home the Men’s Singles trophy. China’s Wang Yidi (Women’s Singles No. 5) and Germany’s Sabine Winter (Women’s No. 26) battled for seven games until Wang won the Women’s Singles title.
Though each of their bouts ended with a deficit of four points or less, Matsushima couldn’t stop Moregard from winning in four straight games (11-9, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9). Matsushima almost avoided a sweep after going up 9-7 in the fourth game, but Moregard went on a four-point run to end the tournament.
Wang began her match at an 0-2 deficit, but she pummeled Winter over their next two games to tie the match. After Winter took the fifth game, Wang narrowly defeated her in both subsequent games to win their match, 4-3 (8-11, 10-12, 11-5, 11-4, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9).
This is the first WTT Champions victory of Moregard’s career, which comes mere months after the Swede won WTT Europe Smash 2025. Wang won her second WTT Champions event this year, after WTT Champions Incheon 2025.
Wang now holds three WTT Champions titles for her career, and this one came after her seventh appearance in a Champions final. None of Moregard, Matsushima or Winter had ever made it to the Finals of a WTT Champions event before Sunday.
Sunday marked the third match between Moregard and Matsushima in the last 90 days, with their prior two battles having taken place at WTT Champions Yokohama 2025 and Europe Smash 2025. Moregard won both of those matches, taking down Matsushima 3-1 in Yokohama and 3-2 in Sweden.
Wang and Winter also faced off in Yokohama. Winter also started that match with a two-point lead, but Wang advanced to the Round of 16 after winning her next three.
Moregard will compete in WTT Champions Frankfurt 2025, the final Champions event before WTT Finals Hong Kong 2025, which begins on Tuesday.
Moregard will face fellow Swede Anton Kallberg (Men's No. 16) in the Round of 32 on Thursday in Frankfurt. Wang will not participate in this upcoming event.
