A thrilling final match at WTT Champions Macao 2025 proved what the table tennis world already knew: China’s Sun Yingsha (Women’s Singles No. 1) still dominates women’s singles.
Sun defeated China’s Wang Manyu (No. 2) in seven games on Sunday, five of which came with a point differential of three or less. Only two total points separated Sun and Wang at the end of the match, with Sun scoring 71 and Wang scoring 69.
This was the third finals of a WTT women’s singles tournament that featured Sun and Wang in 2025, and their 12th total on the international level. Their most recent WTT bout was just three weeks prior to this match, when Sun took home the Europe Smash 2025 women’s singles trophy.
Both of these former WTT Champions Macao winners (Sun won in 2022 and 2024, Wang won in 2023) arrived at this table with convincing semifinal wins over seeded opponents, with Sun besting China’s Kuai Man (No. 4) 4-1 and Wang defeating China’s Chen Xingtong (No. 3). Wang only had one WTT match win against Sun leading up to this match, but she has defeated Sun nine times before at the international level.
The first game started at a back-and-forth pace until Sun went on a five-point run to put her up 6-2. Wang slowly crawled back and even cut Sun’s lead to as little as two points, but it wasn’t enough. Sun took the game 11-8.
Wang carried her momentum into their second game, jumping out to an early 4-1 lead. Sun trailed just behind Wang throughout the game, fighting for the lead throughout the 23 remaining points. The intensity and perseverance between these two players continued until Wang took the game 15-13 and tied the match at one apiece.
Sun commanded most of the third game, leading Wang by six points by the time she reached game point. Wang then scored five consecutive points to slash Sun’s lead to 10-9 before Sun converted her final point, taking the game 11-9 and putting her on top of the match, 2-1.
Wang took the next two games and took over the match lead, 3-2. The fourth game resembled the second, a mostly back-and-forth affair that ended with an 11-9 victory for the two-seed. Wang took over the fifth game and led throughout all 16 points played, with her 11-5 win becoming the largest margin of victory of the match.
Those two games set up an intense sixth game that began with Wang taking an early 2-0 lead. Sun then went on a four-point run before the two started trading points. Sun remained on top of this battle since her first lead, and she would ultimately take the game 11-9 and force a winner-take-all seventh game.
That seventh and final game remained competitive until the 10th point, when both players tied at five points each. Sun went on another five-point run before giving up one to Wang, but her next point earned her an 11-6 victory to seal the game, match, and yet another WTT title.
This is Sun’s sixth WTT tournament victory of 2025, and the third WTT Champions Macao title of her career (2022, 2024). This year alone, Sun has also won WTT Champions Chongqing 2025, Women’s World Cup Macao 2025, Europe Smash 2025, Singapore Smash 2025 and World Table Tennis Championships Finals Doha 2025, while finishing as the beaten finalist in WTT Champions Yokohama 2025.
Sun and Wang will compete in WTT’s next major event, China Smash 2025. The event will run from Sept. 25 to Oct. 5 at Shougang Park in Beijing, China.
