Egyptian superstar Omar Assar has declared for the Season 4 Major League Table Tennis (MLTT) Draft, league sources tell Table Tennis TV.

Assar is a four-time Olympian, a 12-time African Championships medalist (eight-time gold medalist) and a 13-time African Games medalist (seven-time gold medalist). The 34-year-old right-hander has an all-time record of 606 wins and 249 losses (70.9%) in 855 ITTF and WTT matches.

Assar is one of the most decorated table tennis players to ever come out of Africa. In the African Games and African Championships, he has earned five gold medals in Singles, three gold medals in Mixed Doubles, one gold medal in Doubles and six gold medals in Team events.

No other man has ever won more ITTF Africa Cup titles (nine) than Assar, who earned his first Africa Cup gold medal in 2015. He took home the gold medal in six of the last eight Men’s Singles events at the Africa Cup, including ITTF Africa Cup Benghazi 2026.

Assar became the first Egyptian to reach the quarterfinals of the World Championships in 2024, and the second African man to do so behind fellow Season 4 MLTT Draft candidate Quadri Aruna (Men’s Singles No. 48). He also reached the quarterfinals in both the 2020 and 2024 Olympics.

Assar currently ranks as the No. 32 Men’s Singles player in the world, peaking at No. 13 on May 7, 2024 (Week 19). He stunned then-World No. 7 Tomokazu Harimoto (No. 3) at the WTT Star Contender European Summer Series 2022 and has defeated Aruna and Anton Kallberg (No. 34) in various WTT events within the last year.

Assar joins a talented pool of Season 4 MLTT Draft candidates that also includes Aruna, An Jaehyun and Takuya Jin, among several others. The Atlanta Blazers will likely select one of these players with the first overall pick on April 30.

If the Blazers do not select Assar first overall, the Texas Smash will have the opportunity to select him with the second pick. The Florida Crocs will pick third, and fellow Egyptian Elsayed Lashin’s (SPINDEX: 2712) Bay Area Blasters will pick fourth.

MLTT is the only professional table tennis league that assigns incoming players to teams via the draft. The MLTT Draft takes heavy inspiration from other sports leagues based in the United States, such as the National Football League (NFL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA).
